Assistant Director, Athletic Communications

Summary

This individual serves as the chief media relations director for several sports within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. This includes, but is not limited to: serving as one of the department's primary spokespersons; working as a liaison between the department and its varsity teams and the media and community; and generating publicity for the teams and the department as a whole; and acting as one of the key individuals in creating the image of a department that is often viewed as the 'front porch' of the University.

Essential Functions

  • Compilation of individual sport media guides and programs, including the writing, research, design, proofing and layout. The media guides were once printed, but we now make them available on the internet in several different formats.

  • Updating information for official website (BGSUFalcons.com), which includes writing press releases and compiling comprehensive game notes for upcoming events, as well as game recap stories and reviews of weekly events.

  • Assist in the strategizing, implementation and maintenance of the athletic department's presence on the web, which includes BGSUFalcons.com, correlating websites, and the social-media presence of the department.

  • Answering phone and email requests from the media, offices or other sports information departments, including those for new stories, feature articles and other publication and broadcast purposes.

  • Maintaining team statistical data, filing NCAA forms, filing conference forms and completing award nomination forms for the student athletes.

  • Event duties for home games as press box host. Responsible for setup, statistical data and relaying information to media.

  • Miscellaneous: filing, maintaining computer files, responding to special requests from coaches and other department personnel, etc.

  • Oversee and manage the social media content and strategy for assigned sports, working closely with each assigned coaching staff for a clear direction and purpose on social platforms

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

The following Degree is required: 

  • Bachelor's Degree. 

The following Experience is required: 

  • 2 years in Athletic Communications or sports information

The following Licensure, Certifications, or Registration is required:

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and comply with the University’s vehicle use policy.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple tasks and meet stringent deadlines

  • Demonstrated experience/skill with desktop publishing

  • Knowledge of intercollegiate sports programs and NCAA guidelines

  • Ability to travel and work irregular/extended hours

  • Ability to successfully interact with many audiences/groups of people

  • Experience with StatCrew software programs for various sports
