Head Softball Coach

Identifies academically and athletically exceptional students to be a part of Denison and its athletics program. Creates and maintains a positive and inclusive team culture focused on student-athlete growth and development. Complies with University, conference, and NCAA regulations. Supervisory responsibility for assistant coaches and student employees. This role requires the consistent use of sound, independent judgment and an ability to manage complex priorities professionally and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Essential Functions (Estimated % of Time Spent – Total 100%)

Student Recruitment and Retention. Recruit and retain academically and athletically exceptional students to be a part of Denison and its softball program, in partnership and collaboration with the University’s broader admissions and enrollment objectives. (30%)

Training and Competition. Organize, prepare, and conduct individual skill instruction and team training sessions; schedule competitions; ensure a holistic, healthy, and safe athletic environment is available to student-athletes. (30%)

Manage Program Operations. Coordinate team travel, effectively manage budgets, and positively represent the softball program beyond campus - engage with alumni, parents, and staff in a way that advances both the sport program and the University. (20%)

Oversee Assistant Coaches. Direct, guide, and mentor assistant coaches and provide expertise in multiple domains of instruction and game strategy, e.g. pitching, base running, and offense. (15%)

Other duties as assigned. (5%)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree; master’s degree preferred

  • 5 or more years of progressive leadership experience in intercollegiate softball, preferably at an academically rigorous, residential liberal arts institution

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrated commitment to mentoring and supporting student-athletes’ personal growth and development
