Graduate Assistant - Athletics Compliance

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Graduate Assistant will work under the direct supervision of full-time compliance administrators, and will receive practical risk management experience in the areas of sports law and intercollegiate athletic administration. Graduate Assistants should expect to gain experience with issues concerning ethical conduct, amateurism, recruiting, student-athlete eligibility, athletic scholarship awards, sport playing and practice seasons, and the NCAA legislative process.

A Graduate Assistant in the EMU Athletic Compliance Office should expect to be involved in a wide range of duties, including:

  • Evaluating prospective student-athletes’ applications and transcripts to ensure initial academic eligibility;

  • Monitoring prospective student-athlete recruitment, including but not limited to: phone calls, text messaging, social media, contacts, official and unofficial visits, and tryouts;

  • Monitoring the college’s student-athletes’ countable athletically-related activities;

  • Assist in monitoring student-athletes’ academic progress as it relates to NCAA eligibility and progress-toward-degree requirements;

  • Drafting educational material for coaches, staff, and student-athletes;

  • Assisting with student-athlete, staff, and recruiting complimentary ticket processes;

  • Review of athletic financial aid, outside scholarships, and student-athlete benefits;

  • Updating all compliance-related forms;

  • Using various software programs to assist with data entry and management, and
    Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills Needed:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite: Excel, PowerPoint, and Word;

  • Excellent communication and written skills;

  • Strong organizational skills, the ability to anticipate projects, and self-motivation.

  • Willingness to collaborate with staff and various constituent groups;

  • Ability to prioritize a workload;

  • Ability to work under pressure in order to meet deadlines;

  • Capable of working unsupervised and as part of a team;

  • Exhibit a professional disposition on the phone and in person;

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with all aspects of the position, and ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships and partnerships with colleagues.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Full-time enrollment in an Eastern Michigan University graduate program and compliance with eligibility requirements to serve as a graduate assistant is required.

  • Maintain good academic standing in the graduate program; subject to academic standing review at the close of the fall term
    Successful completion of a background check is required

  • Available for the entirety of a graduate program (i.e., two (2) year period) is required

  • Must possess high ethical standards, integrity, and a willingness to strictly adhere to NCAA, Mid-American Conference, University, and departmental rules and regulations.

  • Interest in pursuing a career in athletics compliance or intercollegiate athletics administration.

  • Experience in working with collegiate coaching staffs;

  • Personal athletic competitive experience or knowledge of intercollegiate sports, and interest in gaining greater insight into compliance issues within collegiate athletic departments.

Anticipated start date:
August 2026 or earlier, depending on availability.

Work Hours:
Position is expected to work 20 hours per week. Must have ability to work game days, weekends or evening hours as needed. Benefits:
For a full-time GA appointment, the University provides a tuition scholarship for up to 18 credit hours in each academic year (September 1 to August 31) of the assistantship, as well as $10,000 stipend per academic year.
