Student Athlete Academic Coordinator I/II
Job Summary
The Student Athlete Academic Coordinator coordinates support services for student athletes as they navigate athletic eligibility and academic achievement toward degree completion.
Job Description
Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
• Monitors student progress towards degree and sport eligibility status, including closely monitoring student-athlete grades. Reports concerns to director, coach, and sport administrators.
• Coordinates academic support for student-athletes in the Hartley Academic Resource Center, including tutors, peer academic coaching, and writing lab.
• Leads structured study halls for first time in college, new transfer, and academic at-risk students. Monitors study hall hours for teams with timed requirements.
• Fosters interactions with students in a supportive atmosphere where students will achieve self-sufficiency while implementing their educational goals to reach degree completion in coordination with their goals as student-athletes.
• Works to diligently provide guidance in academic and personal development in a collaborative and mentoring environment.
• Communicates with faculty regarding student-athlete missed class times due to illness or injury.
• Reviews program requirements and prerequisites for NCAA conflicts. Reviews course schedule for practice and travel conflicts.
• Meets with prospective student athletes during campus visits; answers questions and explains campus support services.
• Reviews general admissibility of prospective student-athletes via transcripts.
• Educates and guides student on how to find FGCU technology (Gulfline, Canvas, Eagle Mail, and other resources).
• Reviews student academic and career goals alignment.
• Assists students in understanding academic policies and procedures (grade forgiveness, withdrawal deadlines, repeat rules, and other policies).
• Discusses extracurricular activities that foster personal development.
• Informs students about campus resources. Refers to other departments on campus for resources and/or work with student's success network members to foster assistance in degree completion.
• Assists Director with the NCAA continuing eligibility certification process for assigned sports, which includes mid-year certification, year-end and post-summer session certification of eligibility.
Other Duties:
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements for a Student Athlete Academic Coordinator Level I:
• This position requires either six years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
• Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
Minimum Requirements for a Student Athlete Academic Coordinator Level II:
• This position requires either eight years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
• Experience operating a personal computer and proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
• Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Knowledge of theoretical models of college student development and students in transition.
• Knowledge of NCAA rules on progress towards degree and academic progress rate (APR).
• Knowledge of advising theory and models of development advising.
• Knowledge of state statutes and rules of higher education within the state of Florida.
• Possesses Interpersonal skills.
• Skilled in teaching or ability to present material to audience.
• Coordination, planning, and organization skills.
• Skill and ability to provide attention to detail.
• Effective problem solving and critical thinking skills.
• Effective written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to build positive rapport with a variety of constituents.
• Ability to learn and use academic advising-related technology, such as Microsoft Office, Banner, Degree Works, Appointment Manager, and Florida Shines.
• Ability to learn easily and disseminate detailed information.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others or in teams.
• Ability to work with complex systems in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
• Ability to be flexible and adaptive in a changing environment.
Student Athlete Academic Coordinator Level I - Pay Grade 15
Student Athlete Academic Coordinator Level II - Pay Grade 16
Applicants will be evaluated for roles as either Student Athlete Academic Coordinator I or Student Athlete Academic Coordinator II based on their qualifications.
