Behavioral Health Clinical Case Manager

Position Summary: The Clinical Case Manager works with the mental health programs and functions of the Tulane University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to deliver comprehensive mental health and lifetime wellness services. This position is responsible for providing case management services by: assisting students to reliably connect to community providers and resources; coordinating referrals between university, community, state, regional, and nationwide service providers; triaging clients through brief clinical assessments to determine level of care and disposition; intervening with students in crisis and providing support, resources, and information; contacting insurance companies; keeping an up-to-date database of community referrals; providing individual counseling, group counseling, and outreach as needed maintaining a successful case management system.

Essential Functions of the Job:

Function: Clinical Operations - Coordinates, monitors, and evaluates clinical services for student-athletes, ensuring comprehensive tracking of care plans, treatment goals, and progress; collaborates with student-athletes to establish individualized goals and treatment plans; conducts biopsychosocial assessments and clinical evaluations to determine appropriate level of care and service frequency; documents all student encounters and contracts made on behalf of the student; completes and submits billing documentation as appropriate; maintains comprehensive client files, which may include documents held for safekeeping on behalf of the student; identifies and provides emergency coordination as necessary; makes immediate clinical assessments and responds according to accepted crisis intervention methods and techniques; coordinates other services as appropriate; actively participates in treatment planning and interdisciplinary case review with members of the Athletics Behavioral Health & Performance Team, Sports Medicine, and campus partners; maintains and reports applicable statistics regarding programs and services; coordinates referrals between university, community, state, regional and nationwide service providers; conducts triage assessments to determine acuity, risk, and appropriate disposition for student-athletes presenting with mental health concerns; intervenes with students in crisis and providing support, resources and information; provides short-term, evidence-based individual and group counseling, outreach, and psychoeducation tailored to the student-athlete population; develops proactive relationships with student-athletes and teams to encourage early help-seeking and reduce stigma around mental health support; assists students in managing pain, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, career transition or other issues through counseling, referrals, and participation in the care team; conducts follow-ups with patients after treatment. Follow-ups will consist of updating contact information, recording prescribed treatment, reviewing goals, baseline diagnostic status, symptom severity, and treatment adherence, and other pertinent information; manages documents and coordinates collaboration for Tulane Athletic Care Team (multidisciplinary team for student athlete well-being); reassesses those patients at each contact and arranges a full team reassessment every six months; communicate any new or significant needs or special patient circumstances with legal or medical safety ramifications to the Assistant Athletic Director immediately; and manages university sanctioned follow-up protocols for student athletes in coordination with the Office of Student Affairs. Required Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in social work, counseling, psychology or a related behavioral health field.

  • Current Licensed Professional Counselor, PLPC, LCSW or other mental health therapist license recognized by the State of Louisiana (or the ability to obtain within 30 days of the start date)

  • One year of experience with direct patient care, case management and psychosocial issues of adults

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities/Competencies:

  • Experience providing case management, crisis intervention, brief assessment/triage, and care coordination to young adults and/or college students.

  • Experience in high demand outpatient or inpatient health settings.

  • Experience and interest in working in a fast paced and evolving setting

  • Ability to work effectively with a multi-disciplinary team of mental health providers.

  • Experience providing culturally competent care to a diverse client population.

  • Knowledge and experience in the use of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, and treatment procedures. This includes acute, chronic, and traumatic illness/injuries; common medications and their effects/side effects; medical terminology.

  • Knowledge and use of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the APA (DSM-5).

  • Knowledge of community resources, how to make appropriate referrals to community and other agencies for services, and ability to coordinate services.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team of mental health

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with campus personnel, such as professionals in academic affairs and other student services providers.

  • Demonstrated ability to work within a large system and to collaborate effectively in a large mental health services agency.

  • Ability to focus on orientation of details while also working towards long term goals.

  • Demonstrated ability to work quickly, timely, and effectively in an independent manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and timely with multidisciplinary personnel

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and execute daily priorities, establish short term and long-term goals, while managing incoming responsibilities and tasks

  • Coachability, flexibility, and an interest in clinical and professional growth with the ability to take in professional feedback

  • Ability to present comfortably and effectively to large groups

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 2 years direct experience providing case management, brief assessment/triage, and crisis intervention services.

  • Experience working with collegiate student-athletes.

  • Experience working in a university counseling center.

  • Experience and expertise working with college students who have marginalized identities or historically underutilize mental health services.

NCAA Related: 

Ensures that all Department of Athletics and University related activities operate in full compliance with university, conference and NCAA rules and regulations. Attends and participates in scheduled compliance seminars and complies with all the Athletic Department’s efforts to monitor compliance with NCAA regulations. Seeks interpretations from the compliance staff before acting when necessary. Reports potential rules violations immediately. Completes required compliance paperwork in a timely and efficient manner.  Monitors all his/her areas and/or program activities closely to maintain compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
