Assistant Coach - Track & Field/Cross Country

The University of Pikeville in Pikeville, Kentucky is seeking an innovative and motivated professional for the position of Assistant Coach - Track & Field/Cross Country within the Athletic Department. This is an exceptional opportunity for a dedicated coach to join a forward-thinking athletic department that values academic achievement, student-athlete development, and meaningful out-of-classroom experiences. The Assistant Track & Field/Cross Country Coach will report directly to the Director of Track & Field/Cross Country and assist with all aspects of the program, including coaching, recruiting, retention, practice planning, student-athlete support, and administrative duties.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the management and supervision of athletic activities, competitions, and practice sessions in a manner that promotes individual growth, athletic skill development, leadership, teamwork, discipline, respect, and good sportsmanship.

  • Participate in the recruitment and scouting of prospective Track & Field/Cross Country student-athletes.

  • Recruit academically and athletically qualified students who align with the expectations and culture of the University and athletic program.

  • Support student-athlete retention within the Track & Field/Cross Country program.

  • Assist in scheduling, planning, and conducting practices, training sessions, and competitions.

  • Participate in developing training schedules in collaboration with the Director of Track & Field/Cross Country.

  • Help ensure all Track & Field/Cross Country coaches work together toward common program goals and promote unity within the team, athletic department, campus, and community.

  • Assist the Director of Track & Field/Cross Country with office, administrative, and program-related duties as assigned.

  • Understand and uphold the expectations, policies, and procedures of the Athletic Department.

  • Understand and comply with NAIA eligibility rules and regulations.

  • Provide for the safety of student-athletes, coaches, facilities, and equipment during practices, activities, travel, and competitions.

  • Regularly attend and participate in departmental meetings, professional development opportunities, and other required events.

  • Collaborate with campus constituents to assess, support, and improve the student-athlete experience within the Track & Field/Cross Country program.

  • Understand and support the culture of the Track & Field/Cross Country program, the Athletic Department, and the University.

  • Operate university vehicles in accordance with university policies.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications – Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Three to five years of coaching or playing experience at the collegiate level.

  • Prior recruiting experience required.

  • Must be able to support and follow the vision and direction of the Track & Field/Cross Country program.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and under challenging conditions.

  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and travel as required.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to work collaboratively with coaches, student-athletes, staff, and campus partners.

  • Demonstrate commitment to working with students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including students with disabilities.

  • Ability to work successfully as part of a team across all levels of the organization.

  • Commitment to contributing to the mission of the University.

  • Must be able to travel for recruiting, practices, competitions, and other program-related activities.
